When Does a Secured Card Graduate? The Data Per Issuer (2026)
Most comparison sites list deposit and fee. Almost none tell you WHEN the card graduates — or whether it does at all. Our engine covers 18 products; here is what the graduation data shows.
Why graduation is the number that actually matters
A secured deposit is dead money while it sits. Graduation is when it comes back AND your line becomes unsecured — the single event that turns a rebuilding tool into a real card. Two cards with identical fees can differ by years in graduation reality.
The three graduation designs
From our 18-product engine: (1) AUTO — the issuer reviews you and upgrades without being asked; (2) REQUEST — the cardholder must ask, and issuers are not obligated to say yes; (3) NONE — spend-only and loan products never "graduate" because there is nothing to refund or convert. Knowing which design you hold changes your whole timeline.
Auto graders — the review comes to you
Capital One Platinum Secured and Quicksilver Secured: automatic review starting around month 6, and Capital One can add an unsecured line on TOP of your deposit before fully graduating it. This is the most builder-friendly design in the market — your only job is clean on-time payments.
Request graders — you must ask
Both OpenSky variants: upgrade request around month 6, initiated by you. Set a calendar reminder for month 5 — a missed request window is the most common reason deposits sit a year past eligibility.
The "no graduation" products — and why that is not a flaw
Chime Credit Builder and Varo Believe are spend-only: your money was never locked, so there is nothing to graduate — the "refund" happened the day you spent your own money. Builder loans (Self, Credit Strong, Kikoff) end by completing the term: savings return at completion. Zolve ties your limit to your checking balance — the raise comes from your banking behavior, not a review.
How to speed up any graduation
Regardless of design: keep reported utilization under 10% (pay before statement date), never miss a payment (one 30-day late can push a review out quarters), and let the account age past the 6-month FICO floor. Graduation reviews look at exactly the behavior you control.
The honest caveats
Month-6 is a STARTING review, not a guarantee — thin files can take 9-12 months. And graduation policies change silently: our tracker carries dated verification per issuer. If a row is older than 90 days, verify at the issuer.
